Monterey | $4.75 Million
A Georgian Revival-style house built in 1939, with seven bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two half bathrooms, on a 4.4-acre lot
This grand estate was built by George Loorz, the general contractor for Hearst Castle, in 1939. The sellers have owned the property for 20 years and have made some updates, but much of the original craftsmanship — including moldings in the living and dining rooms, and wood paneling in the library — remains intact.
This part of California is popular with golfers: Pebble Beach Golf Links is about 15 minutes away, and four other courses are within a 30-minute drive. Other local attractions include Cannery Row and Monterey Bay Aquarium, about 10 minutes away by car.
Size: 7,467 square feet
Price per square foot: $569
Indoors: An ornate wrought-iron gate flanked by tall hedges separates this property from the street, and a winding driveway leads to the front door. The foyer has colorful chinoiserie wallpaper and wide, arched doorways with Georgian-style moldings.
Through the arch to the right of the entry is a formal living room with a fireplace mantel detailed in gold leaf, three sets of French doors that open to the garden, and crystal sconces. Through the arch to the left is a wood-paneled library with built-in bookshelves and hand-painted stained-glass windows facing the patio.
Straight back from the entry is a formal dining room with herringbone-patterned wood floors and a bay of windows looking out to the backyard. A swinging door connects this room to the kitchen, where the cabinets are painted in a muted shade of green and the center island is topped with marble.
Off one side of the kitchen is a guest suite with a large bedroom and a pink marble bathroom with a deep soaking tub; off the other is a hallway that leads to a home gym with Spanish-style tile floors. There are also two half bathrooms on this level — one off the kitchen hall and the other off the foyer; both have colorful floral wallpaper.
A staircase with an elegant wood banister leads from the foyer to the second floor, where there are six bedrooms. At the top of the stairs are two guest rooms, one large enough to hold a king-size bed and the other slightly smaller; they share a full bathroom with a walk-in shower. A door allows both bedrooms and the bathroom to be closed off from the hallway, so they could function as one large suite.
Across the hall is the primary suite, which has a chandelier, original paneling on the walls and a fireplace surrounded by marble and topped with a mirror that has a painted pastoral scene set into the frame. The en suite bathroom has two vanities and floral wallpaper extending to the closet doors.
At the far end of the main hallway is another suite with three bedrooms and a full bathroom. One of the bedrooms has a mirrored closet, and all three are large enough to hold queen-size beds.
Outdoor space: Most of the rooms on the first floor have access to the outdoor spaces, which include a manicured garden with low, flowering hedges and mature fruit trees. Brick pathways connect the gardens to several small patios, and a larger brick patio just off the main house offers ample space for entertaining. A walkway leads from the house down to a swimming pool with a rock waterfall surrounded by palm trees. The detached garage has three parking spots, and there is room for more cars in the driveway.

San Clemente | $4.8 Million
A beachfront house built in 2013, with four bedrooms and four bathrooms, on a 0.06-acre lot
This house is in the Capistrano Shores community, which was founded as a mobile-home park in the 1960s and is now the site of a mix of midcentury modular homes and new construction. The neighborhood’s main draw is the coastline; many houses, including this one, have direct beach access. Several casual restaurants and shops selling bicycles and surfing gear are within walking distance, as is the San Clemente Metrolink Station, with trains to San Diego and Orange County. Downtown San Diego is about an hour away by car; Laguna Beach is a half-hour in the other direction.
Size: 2,654 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,809
Indoors: A gate at the street opens to a partially covered patio extending to the ocean-facing side of the house. A Dutch door set in the middle of the patio leads into a foyer with hardwood floors that flow into an open living area.
At the far end of this space is a sitting area organized around a fireplace with a white mantel and built-in cabinets. A floor-to-ceiling window faces an oceanfront patio, and glass pocket doors open to a covered portion of a side patio, turning it into an outdoor living-and-dining room with beach access.
The adjacent kitchen has soapstone countertops, a six-burner range and a dedicated beverage refrigerator. A dining nook opposite the center island has built-in seating.
Also on this level, off the entryway, are a guest room with a built-in desk and en suite bathroom, a half bathroom, and a laundry room with more soapstone counters.
On the second level is an open family room with space for a sectional sofa and an entertainment center. A door on one side of this space leads to a home office with a private deck overlooking the ocean. Next door is the primary bedroom, also designed to maximize ocean views with a large window; the en suite bathroom has a farmhouse-style double sink and a walk-in shower.
On the other side of this floor are two guest rooms with vaulted ceilings, roughly equal in size. They share a bathroom with a double vanity and sea glass-inspired tile trim.
Outdoor space: The open-air section of the lower-level patio is equipped with a built-in barbecue, a bar and an outdoor shower. The covered part of the patio includes a firepit and a glass door that leads to an oceanfront deck with space for lounge chairs. The beach is steps away. A single-car garage is attached to the house.
Taxes: $60,000 (estimated), plus a $796 monthly homeowner association fee

San Marino | $4.788 Million
A 1928 Mediterranean-style house with five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms, on a 0.76-acre lot
San Marino, a small city east of Pasadena, is best known as the home of the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens, a complex established by the railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington that includes a collection of more than eight million manuscripts. Also in San Marino, a few blocks from this house, is the Old Mill, a museum run by the city that is believed to be the oldest commercial building in Southern California. Strict historic preservation laws mean that many San Marino homes built in the 1920s and 1930s still have their original facades. This house was designed by the architect Heth Wharton, who built a number of apartment complexes in the area.
Size: 5,759 square feet
Price per square foot: $831
Indoors: The house is set back from the street, behind a lawn and a circular driveway. The wood front door opens into a foyer with high ceilings, painted landscape scenes on the walls, an iron light fixture and a staircase with a wrought-iron railing.
To the left is a formal living room with a black-marble fireplace and casement windows facing the front porch. Off one side of the room is a study with built-in bookshelves and access to a covered patio; off the other is the primary suite, which has a large closet, a bathroom with heated floors and a wet bar.
Across the foyer is a formal dining room with red floral wallpaper and more casement windows facing the front porch. A nearby breakfast room is papered in a blue-and-orange lattice print that echoes the bright orange china cabinets and matching ceiling trim. The adjacent kitchen has cabinets painted the same color, and a ceiling and walls trimmed with white and blue subway tile. A laundry room off the kitchen connects this part of the house to a guest room with an en suite bathroom.
Upstairs, the hallway is open to the foyer below, and the largest of the second-floor bedrooms is to the right of the landing; it has a walk-in closet and an en suite bathroom tiled in pink and black (a popular color combination in homes of this period). Next door, a small room with plaid wallpaper and original cabinets could make a good nursery. Two more bedrooms, with built-in closets and original doorknobs, are off the main hallway; a private hallway connects them to a full bathroom with aqua and white tile.
Outdoor space: Behind the house is a covered patio with ample space for a dining table and additional furniture, along with an outdoor kitchen with a grill and a sink. A paved walkway connects the patio to a swimming pool with a fiberglass cover. A flat expanse of grass beyond the pool has space for play equipment or a garden, and the perimeter fence is lined with mature trees. The detached garage holds three cars.
